How Journaling Can Help You Sleep Better

One of the reasons many of us have trouble sleeping is because we can't turn off our mind. We keep thinking about our worries, things that went wrong, and all the unfinished tasks. Our mind puts these things right in front of us because we have an evolutionary bias towards negativity. For millions of years of evolution, it helped us stay alive.

Journaling helps you put all those worries and negative feelings on paper and "trap" them there. It helps your mind to unwind. It's like telling your brain that you have noted those worries or what you need to do so it can relax and not keep reminding you.

When you write down what went wrong and focus on what you have learned from it, it will help your brain stop worrying and start seeing your obstacles as learning experiences. When your brain worries less, you get better sleep.
Follow that by taking a minute to write three good things that happened to you during the day. You will promote gratitude and start to feel much better. It fights your brain's negativity bias and forces your brain to look for the positive things that happen to you during the day.
You can find the tiniest little things even on the most challenging days. Like you had a fantastic coffee in the morning or your child laughed incredibly hard in the afternoon. There is always something to be grateful for, even in the hard things even during the hard times.
Your brain will work through what you think of last as you sleep. You want it to be positive, a gratitude.
It seems so simple, but it works. It programs your subconscious mind to be calmer, worry less, and feel better throughout the day and night.
