Four Tips to Help You Start Journaling

Journaling is a powerful tool to calm your mind and stress less, overcome worries, and focus more on things that matter.Whether you have never journaled or been journaling on and off and that habit never really stuck with you, these tips will help you get startedand keep your journaling practice.

  • 1. Just start

Don't stress about tools, time, how much, how little, should you read it or not. Just do it. Don't start with "I want to write ten pages, 30 minutes a day…" It's just like with meditation or any other habit. Start small. The idea is to create momentum that you can build from to develop the habit. It is essential when you feel like you don't have time to journal. Everyone has the time and willpower to write a few sentences a day.

  • 2. Write for yourself

You are not writing for an audience; you are not writing to create a masterpiece. You are writing for yourself, and no one has to read it. Not even you. Finding joy is an ongoing process, engagement with your ideas over and over again. It doesn't matter if your writing is repetitive; write down what you need.

  • 3. Get out of your head

Ann Frank said that "paper is more patient than people." So don't vomit your thoughts on your employees, friends, family, or driver in front of you who is taking forever. Use the page and write your thoughts and emotions. The page is forgiving and patient, keeps secrets, doesn't care if you contradict yourself or if you are whining. Just put it down on the page. The page will help. One of the reasons that we are anxious and stressed is because we are trapped in our heads with all this stuff. Journaling helps you zoom out so you get distance between yourself and your thoughts. Instead of trying to change them, we can then accept them and change our response to them.

  • 4. Use a physical journal

We are overwhelmed by technology. It's good to be free of devices and have something not digital in your life. Consider using Joyrnal - it's designed, so it takes only a few minutes to write. It will help you begin and keep your journaling practice to calm your mind and become more content and productive.
